Hilo Hat Draw 2010

Hello Everybody,

The Hilo Hat Draw is coming. The dates are Feb. 20-21, 2010.

You can register here.

Also, we will be offering a few Hiloships to those in need. This will be a $50 tournament fee instead of $90. But be advised, you will be expected to help out a couple of hours each day. Please only apply for this option if you really need it.

Email me if you want to volunteer or if you want a Hiloship. Don't forget to register by Jan. 15th for the early registration price. Hiloships will not be offered after this date as well. Thank you all for your help...with everyone's support, we'll make this the best tournament in Hawaii ever (or at least the drunkest if I can help it).

Fall League '09

This week marks the beginning of Fall League '09...Swing of Fire vs. the World. In this epic opening showdown, Swing of Fire pulled an early lead and never gave it up, despite an encouraging final effort and harrowing comeback by the World. The game ended 15-12 with Swing of Fire gaining control of the league. But the World is not finished yet...there are already strategic plans in the work to "Tanya Harding" Keoki, Swing of Fire's first week MVP. The next few weeks will only tell whether Hilo Ultimate truly belongs to Swing of Fire or the World.

We, the big island crew, had a blast! Everything was awesome!

Our men, Helolo, won the spirit award via mustaches and boat races...hells yeah!!!

It is dusty around this site. Yikes!!

Well i left and then i came back because, seriously, who could stay away from Hilo Ultimate?!?!

Turns out nothing much has changed. Our community is still kickin' or should i say huckin' and as tight as ever. People come and go, so is the life on this island.

I am sure the traffic on this site has decreased quite a bit and so I went ahead and created a Facebook profile for us. So check it out and join if you want.

In other news:

1. Kaimana Klassik 22 is coming up quickly! Feb. 13-16 2009. Hilo is sending their sexy and hairy men's team Helolo and a few of our gorgeous ladies to play with Oahu's Sippin' Sallies. We're excited!!

2. Maui Hat Draw is also happening the week after Kaimana. Registration is cheap this year and over 100 folks already signed up. So go check it out!!!

3. League 356 (i can't even remember what number we are on) is going start after Kaimana. I am volunteering to be the comish unless someone else is dying to do it!

4. Night Ultimate returned this January and man, was it ever a success: over 20 folks showed up and we had a fun show down between Hilo and the World :). Can't wait for the next one? Stay tuned!

League Finals Upset!

The wet Hilo weather returned just in time for our league finals last Sunday, but we all had a fun time playing in a little bit of rain. After defeating Red in the play-in game, the White team advanced to the championship match vs. the undefeated Pink Torpedoes. Both teams played savage or nearly so because of injuries and a few missing players. By halftime, it looked like the first game helped White Swing of Fire warm up - they led 8-4. In the second half, Pink made a number of runs but was never quite able to take the lead. Red won, 15-12. After the game, we all feasted on a variety of goodies that everyone brought to share. Our exemplary Spirit Players for the season were JP and Rose. Congratulations and mahalo to everyone who came out and played so hard this season! (insert cool league pic here...anyone?)

Bouquet League Week 1

Wow, over three months since we've had a Hilo Ultimate blog update. We really miss you Dine...thanks go out to Katie for giving me access to post and read her email!

Thanks or blame goes to Captain Mongo for changing the Patriot League into the Bouquet League. Happy Valentine's Day in September (I <3 Mike Long).

The final score was 13-12-9 or something like that, in order of Pink-Red-White. Each of those teams gets 3-2-1 points in the standings, respectively. Everyone but me had great spirit, so kudos to all of you!

For next week, let's try and come up with team names (other than SoF), start play at 4:30 sharp, and do team cheers at the end of play. I will bring spirit player prizes and/or beers. It has been a great start for our league, if you couldn't make it last week, make sure to show up next time!

A Big Mahalo to You Dine!

The Hilo Ultimate Community sadly says goodbye to one of our most dedicated, spirited, and fun loving players this month, Nadine.

Nadine has been a valued member of the Hilo Ultimate Community for four glorious years. She is one of our strongest female players on the field and has contributed to the enjoyment of playing Ultimate in more ways than can even be expressed! Thanks to Nadine, we have an ongoing blog to document the happenings of Hilo Ultimate and highlight the great players we have. She has been a instrumental member on three Swing of Fire Teams and the 1st She Go Ho Team. She has played in a number of other tournaments with other teams including the 2007 Potlatch Tournament in Seattle. Nadine , aka "Spirit Queen", has headed the spirit committee on every team she plays on bringing us amazing contributions like the D - Cape, She Go Ho half time show, brilliant lyrics to opening songs, victory goblet, Dave Gelber masks, side line music, short skirts,the list goes on and on and on.

So, to you Nadine, we say thank you. Thank you for your friendship, your amazing spirit, for challenging us all on and off the field to be better players. Thank you for being a part of our community. Your presence will be greatly missed. We love you and wish you the best of luck on all your future endeavors!

1. Hilo Ultimate League VI
It has begun. Another league full of intensity, fierce competition, sick D's, hot lay outs, and spirit awards. So far yellow and red are battling for the first two places while a star studded green time tries to find its groove. Two games down but much more to go. Stay tuned for results of this awesome spring league!!!
PS: congrats to Rose, She-mo, Dan, and Lody for winning spirit awards!!! And thanks to He-mo, phil, jp, and joel for commissioning and captaining :)

2. Saturday Night Ultimate
Another good turn out for hucks under the stars in Honoka'a. We played six on six and had good fun. Doug showed us that even if you just attended a fun wedding and you're still dressed in fine jeans and a hula shirt you can still lay for it!!! Come out for the next one this month's last saturday...see our calendar at the bottom of this page!

3. Loco Moco Coed Tourney
Oahu is thinking about another small inter island tourney for this years laborday weekend (or around then). If you're interested let us know!!!

Hilo Hat Draw Magic

Wow...what to say about the most amazing Hat Draw ever. Over 120 people from as far as Ireland, UK, Canada, Alaska, and Oahu ;)

Everyone came with great spirit, with happy faces and support. Everything went smoothly and the games were well played. 8 teams, 8 games plus semis and finals...a full weekend. Friday night was game filled and saturday we enjoyed a most delicious buffet and the wicked fun band Funkaloha!

Under The Lights

After an almost 6 months hiatus, hilo peops finally made it to Honoka'a for a superb and fun game of ultimate under the lights. The weather was fresh with one tropical rain shower and a cool breeze. But 5 on 5 kept us running and warm. Thanks to Drew for setting up this fun event every last saturday of the month.

Next Game: Saturday March 1st (since feb 23rd is taken by the hat draw).

Big Island Savage Seven

It's on...the Big Island's First Official Savage Seven Tourney on January 19th.

At this point it looks like we have enough for 4 teams playing 4/3 format. We need players, especially women, or teams to help us fill out an 8 team tournament.

Details:

Where: Big Island -Hilo (bayfront)
When: January 19,2008 (Saturday)
Format: 4/3 -Savage- absolutely no subs! 1-day only. (I figure two pools of four, top two teams in each pool advance to semi's and finals.

Cost: Between $10 and $20 - some food will be provided, maybe pizzas for lunch, and of course beer. No overnight accomodations. Pay before you play! (I'll start working on the budget pretty soon)

Kaimana Update

Helolo and She Go Ho are officially accepted to Kaimana Klassik XXI.
The tourney should be fun with it finally being legal ;)

She Go Ho wasn't able to get enough Big Island players so we are joining with some Oahu players as well as the Alaska team : Bella Coola.
We're excited to have such a great mix of players and want to say thanks to oahu and alaska for joining with us.

Helolo has an abundance of great players. We are excited to see how far they will get this year and what awesome facial hair they can produce.

Rockin' Rules

Picks:

A pick occurs whenever an offensive player moves in a manner that causes a defensive player guarding (II.G) an offensive player to be obstructed by another player. Obstruction may result from contact with, or the need to avoid, the obstructing player.
A pick can be called only by the obstructed player and must be announced by loudly calling pick immediately after it occurs.
If play stops according to XVI.C, players reposition according to XVI.C.4. In addition, the obstructed player is then allowed to move to recover the relative position lost because of the pick.

We will be introducing, explaining, and describing a rule each time from the 11th edition UPA rules. I encourage discussion for each rule in the comment section as well as any additions and explanations to the rule. So here is our first!

Spirit of the Game

Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed upon rules, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate unsportsmanlike conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting opposing players, dangerous aggression, belligerent intimidation, intentional infractions, or other win-at-all-costs behavior are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players.

Big Island Post Kaimana Hat Draw

We are putting on the Hilo Hat Draw, http://hiloultimate .com/default. aspx , this year over the weekend of February 22 - 24, 2008 in Hilo, Hawaii (The weekend after Kaimana 21). It is a coed tournament filled with the usual shenanigans including beer, Frisbee, and did I say beer? The twist is that it will be held on the beautiful Big Island. Imagine a lush jungle environment, with an erupting volcano, killer snorkeling, gorgeous beaches and a fun little town. We will have free camping at Kole Kole Beach Park which has it's own beautiful swimming hole and waterfall. Please forward this to all of your various Ultimate groups where ever you may currently be to get out the word.

Congrats to all the Big Island players and friends who have safely returned from Hopu Ka Lewa 9. Another fun filled, exciting, and exhausting tourney. The Big Island players were spread amongst a variety of teams:

Swing of Fire
Caliaskawai'i
Hucking Faoles
Torres Ranchos Spirit Team
Where's my McDreamy

All teams did well and played hard. After 7+ games we were all happy yet tired.

It was especially exciting to see so many of our players win spirit awards for their team: Nick, Keoki, and Sarah K. And Swing of Fire brought home the coveted "Most Spirited Team" award, for which we tied with the awesome Sippin' Sallies and had to battle for over a game of twister. Katie, Eric, and Sarah N. fought hard on the twister board and Katie was the last one standing....YAY!

Swing of Fire placed second in the Boat Race competition losing closely to the Swingers & Dumpers. Next year, we'll get that trophy back!

BIG thanx to Unky Dave for being such an amazing captain and fearless leader, to Timber and Katie for being fantastic assistant captains, to JeanE and Katie for leading us to the spirit award, and to JP for drinking us into the boat race finals!

And a big mahalo to the HOPU tournament committee for their hard work and dedication.

Whoa, a lot of spiderwebs and dust around this ol' blog. So how about a round of updates...yay!

League VII is officially over. After 5 games of fun competitive play with the Smurfs clearly coming in first and a Money - Minstrels showdown, we had finals last sunday. It was a close game between Money and the Minstrels but in the end Money showed how much their worth. An exciting and beer filled final game reinforced the power of the Smurfs who won 11-5 against Money. Congrats to the three hot girlie captains: Katie, Jeane, and Sarah; to the overall spirit winners: Jeane & Timber; and our fearless leader: Joel

Swing of Fire is getting ready to play at HOPU in three weeks. Sunday pick up will consist of scrimmages between the swingers and any other fearless Hilo player wanting to take us on!!!

The Big Island Pre-HOPU Hat Draw is coming up on November 4-5th in Hawi.

League VII- Game II

So the Tye-dyed hippies emerge once again victorious. Even without Mark and Ralph as subs, the Blue Balled Anal Suck wads pulled off a decisive win.
The speed and hucking power of the hippies is definitely a force to be reckoned with. But the game was much closer this week with a final score of:

I'd like to highlight the wonderful comeback of the green team (maybe you should fake more injuries, Timber...and call more fouls). So next week we will continue our name giving...the tye-dyes name the reds (time to get us back), the reds name the greens, and the greens name the tye-dyes. Also, please remember to give your captain $5 for the party. Everyone have a wonderful week and let's have another spirited and fun game next Sunday.

Fall League: Game 1

The first battle has been fought, but the war is not over. The psychedelic smurfs cruised to an opening victory yesterday evening (maybe next week we won't give them Ralph and Mark as subs). But the competition was wonderful and the game was pleasantly intense even with the exhausted Swing of Fire team on a 4 hour ultimate marathon.

The final score: psychedelic smurfs: 15, money: 9, menstrual minstrels: 8.

Though these names seem adequate enough we will be putting a slight twist on next week's match-up. The tye-dye's name the green's, the green's name the red's, and the red's name the tye-dye's.
Also, your commissioner and a highly select and confidential committee have formulated a new plan for team positions and directions of the pulls for the beginning of the game and at halftime (does that make any sense?) which is fair to all teams and one that not even Timber can b***h about. Just a reminder, bring $5 to your captain for the final party. Everyone have a wonderful week and see you all on Sunday at 4 p.m. but contrary to flying rumors, we will not begin until 4:30 p.m.

So the time has come for another league to prepare us all for Hopu. Whether we are staying true to Hilo or backstabbing on a San Diego/Alaska "mutt" team, we all must practice together for our November competition. Our Fall League is set to commence on September 16th and run six weeks until the finals on October 21st. We will begin registration this Sunday and I will try to be present as much as possible during the next couple of weeks to get everyone signed up. What we need now is 3 captains to lead their teams to victory (or in Andrew's dream world: to provide him with beer at every game). Start thinking if you would like to be a captain. I would prefer 3 ladies but not any of our alpha females. Let's try for some of our relatively new girls (i.e. cory, sarah, other sarah, jeannie, bridgette, timber, etc.). So let's all have a great league and I'll see everyone on the pitch.

Its been dusty on this blog...no new updates for a while so i thought i'd bring everybody up to speed. Here are some upcoming events for Big Islanders:

Hawaii State Overall Disc Championships! - The events are sponsored by The Hawaii Ultimate League Association (HULA). This year's Overalls will feature 6 of the 7 possible events - only freestyle will be excluded. It's going to be a packed weekend, so please be sure to register early, and be sure to be there on time. Events include: DDC, Accuracy, Distance, Self-Caught Flight (MTA and TRC), Golf, and Discathon.
HOPU KA LEWA 9! - Swing of Fire, our very own Big Island coed team is sending their boat racing champions back to Oahu to defend the title. We are very excited. There is a second team with some big island players going as well so there is some fun to be had. Check out the HOPU website for more information. Practices will start september 2nd...better get ready!

Wouldn't that have been funny....well ok so not ALL...but we did win new friends (thanx gilligan, skippy, ellie, laura, emu, crush, rookie, bamboo, and millhouse...you guys are AWESOME) and two games. On saturday we had 4 games and lost the first three by 1 or 2 points. Very close games and very fun! the team came together so well like we'd been playing together for years. By game 4, mongo managed to find rum, a car battery and a blender and voila...you got yourself some lava flows! Before you know it you also got yourself a very very drunk swing of fire team...which turns out can win games that way. We won game 4 by the power of booze.
So much fun!
After a sweet party at the Red Hook Brewing Company with smoked salmon, we danced the night away!
The next day, Swing won the first game but lost the second one. So that was that. Overall, a sweet weekend with lots of fun. Thank you Gilligan for bringing the crew, thanx also to mongo for all that spirit, thanx to JP for your mad ukelele skills, thanx to Timber for always keepin it positive, thanx to Lody for being so fun, thanx to Jon for cross field hammers, thanx to Nate for joining us last minute, and thanx to Canuck Matt who joined us as our honorary hilo-canadian...so good to see you again.

I had a blast, hope you had fun too!

The Exciting Conclusion of League VI

Wow! What a fantastic day of Ultimate.
The Black Mambas and Trippin' Turtles started the afternoon with the semi-finals game. The play was well matched and intense. From the beginning the score tied up. If it wasn't for the hard cap at 8 and a clutch Adam arrival, the game would have surely gone on for hours. In the end, the Trippin' Turtles squeaked out a victory and went on to play Monkey Butt in the playoffs.

Monkey Butt and Trippin Turtles faced off on the field, while the Black Mambas heckled from the sidelines consuming large quantites of amber bounty. At half time, it seemed truly dire for the Trippin Turtles with the score cards reading 2-8. However, play got a little more exciting during the second half of the game with the Turtles scoring 8 more points, and the Monkeys scoring 7 more points to win the game.

Thanks everyone who participated in League VI. It was a fun, spirited, and talented league. What other group of people would show up week after week in ridiculous outfits and play their hearts out. Phil and I have had a great time as commissioners. Thanks Hilo Ultimate for being so awesome!

We're back....we're hoarse...we're tired...but we're happy. It was amazing weekend with awesome games, insane spirit, pink panties, mustache rides and too much booze to boot!

He Lolo and She Go Ho have returned from their first ever tournament. Congratulations to the Big Island men for getting in the top three for the spirit award and for winning one game....yeeehaaa!

Hold up....the girls also showed lots of spirit even though they came home without a win. Each game was filled with fun and very excellent play. We can say that we gave each team a run for their money....yeeehaaa!

A new year...a new venue for Womenz Wednesdayz: Volcano on Haunani Rd. at 4:30pm

Last week they had 12 women out...yay!

It will be "Mostly Womenz Ultimate" with the idea that women along with a few select men that are attentive enough to not mow down the women players are welcome. We will limit the number of men on the field to 4 players, so that women still learning the game wont be rattled with too much aggressive play.

Volcano suffocates on own vog and rain

Hilo squeaked out a victory, being the favorites from the beginning, on a rainy and cold saturday. They outmatched and outclassed a soggy-bottomed volcano crew. The vog suckers put up a good challenge at the beginning but were never able to take the lead. After half time Hilo simply sped ahead with muddy layouts and remarkable precision and agility. The lowlanders crushed volcano with a breathtaking 15-8.
Both sides put up excellent players with great attitudes and often looked flawless. But the mighty hiloians couldn't be broken be it rain, vog, mud, or freezing temperatures.

Thank you to the volcano crew for hosting and for taking the loss with pride. You played awesome. Better luck next time...maybe by then you will have secured Mongo for your team ;)

Ahhh, we're back!!!!
T'was a blissfully beautiful and rambunctious weekend! Lots of sunshine, lots of heat, lots of ultimate, lots of skin, lots of dancing 'n singing' 'n cheering. We're all tired but we're happy!!!

SWING OF FIRE (majority of Hilo players):
Overall - 6th place (5 losses, 4 wins, 1 tie)
Boat Race - 1st place (picture of trophy showing soon)
Spirit - 2nd place (well ok, we tied with Salllies and Pirates so it came down to a 3 way boatrace and them darn ol' cheatin' pirates ...arrrrhhhhh...stole fast racers from other teams and beat us...arrrrrrrhhhh)

League V Finale - Stats and Story

Last night's finals were a mixed bag of hot playing, serious heckling, terrific costuming, and all out fun.
The semi-finals were fast and furious (no joking). Chupa Lachuga got their butts handed to them in about 45 minutes by Beet It with a final score of 9-2 (OUCH!). It has been reported that the green team was so badly mourning the absence of their fearless captain Dave Gelber, that they couldn't manage to play with the fervor they had come to the field with over the rest of the league.

The final game featured Black Hole and Beet It in a head to head battle for the championship. Black Hole and Beet it were neck-in-neck for the first half, but after half-time Beet It broke away for a win of 15-7 (could Black Hole have been distracted by the half time show performed by the half schwilly Chupa Lachuga's?).
It was an overall great playoff afternoon- spirits were high, play was fierce, fun was had.

League V - Finals

The Hilo Ultimate League Finals will begin at 2:00 this coming Saturday!!! Everyone should arrive at 1:30 for warming up, because play will start promptly at 2:00!!! The final score on points for regular league play and seeding for the Finals are as follows:

Black Hole 11 points 1st seed
Chupa Lachuga 10 points 2nd seed
Beet It 9 points 3rd seed

So, in the Playoff Round will be Chupa Lachuga vs. Beet It in a 7 or 8- point game. This game will begin at 2:00 this Saturday!!! Following the playoff round, there will be a short break (15-30 minutes) and then the Final will begin between Black Hole and the winner of the Playoff. The Final will be to 15 or the time cap. Following the Final, awards will be given and the party will commence.

Everyone should bring grilling items and can make pupus to bring if you are happy. I think we will have a really good day of ultimate since the teams were brilliantly chosen. See everyone on the field!!!

Hey Ladies!

It’s that time again – the weather is getting a little cooler (not too much though) – the days of Kaimana have made it slightly into our view – we’re ready to play some women’s ultimate!

What: Wahine Weekend – Fall 2006
When: Oct. 21-22 (Saturday and Sunday)
Where: Makiki District Park on Oahu
Who: All the wahine out there that love to play ultimate and any other wahine we can convince to try it out for the first time.
Why: We love playing womens. It’s less dangerous than playing with the boys. It’s a good chance to recruit. It’s another excuse for a party, good food, good friends to hang out with.

What that means for you – everyone who can, should try to bring along at least one new player. Also, right now Go!, Aloha, and Hawaiian are offering cheap inter-island tickets. Take advantage while you can so you can come spend the weekend with us.

League V - Game 2 Recap

Another saturday another game! The beauty about this weeks game was that all the unexpected happened. Last weeks loser won, and last weeks winner lost. I like that. At this point all teams are even and everything is undecided...how fun!

From the start Green showed its true colors winning every point but one. They came back with a vengeance. Black struggled to keep up and red wasn't even on the score board. But after a while red managed to catch up to black while black spent its energy trying tos tay close to green. But in the end...the order never changed and green took home the win. Red was struggling due to its low numbers and its missing star player. Luckily Pao Pao is in town for a visit and helped red out. With barely 7 players and no subs they managed to give black a run for its money. Both black and green had excellent numbers...congrats for such devoted team members!

Yes, it's here! Women’s ultimate in Hilo! We had an awesome first night of pick-up play with many new faces. We are hoping to build our numbers as we create a supportive environment for newcomers to learn the game. We had several experienced players out there teaching the game.......... and the high point of the night was when a first time player skyed her opponent for a D in the endzone.

We are playing the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at 5:00 PM at the Chiefess Kapiolani School at 966 Kilauea Av. The fields are behind the school on Mohouli St.

League V - Game 1 Recap

Last saturday marked the beginning of our first game for League V. Very exciting indeed.
We have three teams: Lettuce Rock U (green), Beet It (red), and Black Hole (black).

Beet and Hole had only 6 players on the line but were lucky enough to have Eamen and Dan help out. Lettuce had their 7 but were missing some of their hotshots and thus had somewhat of a rough game. Initially Hole took the lead but Beet would have much of it. They quickly gained a lead that wasn't going to be beet ;)

Lettuce struggled throughout the game but eventually made the scoreboard with a wicked cool point! they looked good but i think they are experiencing some growing pains. I am sure they will come back with a vengeance soon enough!

As new people join us every year there are those that leave us. It seems lately we been having a stream of great people saying good bye. It is always sad because when you start playing hilo ultimate you become family!!!

This post is to say aloha to Matt and Jeremy, yeah the really tall one ;)
Matt has already left us this summer and i just haven't had a chance to mention it. Its already to obvious that he is gone. From lil Noah on the sidelines to Matt's strong voice on the field. Matt and his family are very very missed! But we know that they have moved on to fantastic new life in Virginia (i think its Virginia) with a super new job teaching at the university for Matt. We wish him and his family the best of luck and hope you will visit and play a point with us!

Now Jeremy is about to leave and i can't even begin to say how much his red tight undies, funky T's, and his beautiful hair will be missed! Always a smile on his face and with the longest stride in history he is ready to chase after that disk. It's been so great to have you with us all this time and we wish it could be for longer.
Jeremy is moving "home" (Georgia) for a little while only to return for a few weeks later this year when he will leave us for good for an awesome job off the coast of California. Have fun out there and keep comin' back!

Hopu Ka Lewa 8

Our favorite Tourney has been moved to November. That means 2 months from now. YAY! After two years of mud and rain we hope that november will bring drier fields. Let's just keep our fingers crossed. (Not that mud ain't fun...see pic)

Of course we are sending another Big Island team and hope to have as much fun as possible, if not more. A lot of people have expressed interest in joining the team. Please see below for guidelines to determine who gets to go and how much playing time is possible. We would love to have everybody play but a two-day tourney does not leave much room for playing team when too many people are in. So please understand our strict rules and don't despair. There is always KAIMANA in febuary and we are hoping to send a Big Island Men's and Women's team...Yeeehaaa!

By now most of you have heard that there will be another co-ed Hopu KaLewa tournament on Oahu this Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 10-12. AfterSwing of Fire's incredibly fun and successful trip last spring, it looks like there is even more local interest to go again. This is a great opportunity to play something other than "pickup" style ultimate in Hilo,and better your overall game by leaps and bounds.

That said, some of the more experienced players would like everyone to know the details of what is in store if you join this team:

1. Demonstrating Spirit Of The Game is essential for all team members. Everyone is expected to give their all while having a good time and being respectful of the safety and calls of others. Contributing to cheers both before and during the tournament also is a SOTG requirement.

2. Committment: One week from today, 9-5-06 is the deadline to email Eric if you want to commit to the team. If you can't commit by then thereprobably won't be a spot on the roster for you. If you back out aftercommitting, you will drop lower than Paul Nash on everyone's list. Those that have already emailed or told me verbally of their interest will needto email again to make it official, please.

3. Costs: Average round trip fare to Honolulu and back is ~$150. We are all going to coordinate flights to be there early Friday and leave late Sunday. You have plenty of advance notice to try and get a good deal on a flight, but if you arrive at a different time you might have to find your own ride tothe other side of the island where the fields are.
Everyone will be expected to chip in for a shared rental car(s)/van: ~$30
Tournament fee: ~$100, depending on how early you register.
Uniforms: ~$30.
So in order to go to this tournament you need to be prepared to spend on the order of $300.

4. There will be team practices once a week, starting an hour or two before the league games that are coming up. We will do drills, work on offensive and defensive sets, and practice plays. Playing time at the tournament will be based on your attendance, attitude, and performance at the practices. If you can't make many practices or refuse to play as instructed but still want to go, you shouldn't expect to play much. At the practices or after league we will have boat race training sessions,which will determine our "line" for this competition. There is a boat race trophy up for grabs at this tournament!

5. The team's roster is open to you if you can meet all the requirements listed above. Showing your no-no's may or may not get you on the team, Mo.

6. Captains: Dave is the men's captain, so if you hate him remember that you will have to take orders from him. Amy is the women's captain, and you are already used to taking orders from her. Everyone will have input on this team, but the final decisions will bemade by these two. Our spirit captain is Nadine, of course.

It's that time again...Hilo's Ultimate League returns. Hard to believe and yet exciting that this will be our 5th league. This league's commissioner will be Morris. Sign-up sheets will be available this week at the field. Make sure you let Morris know ASAP that you want to play.

Please also indicate whether you want league on Saturdays or Sundays. Some people have expressed a wish to move league to saturdays so that we can stay afterwards and relax drink beers etc without worrying about work the next day.

Last but not least, if you want to be a captain...this is your chance...let Morris know!

What a wonderful way to end the summer and get a bunch of fun loving ultimate freaks together than a party out at the D and B's farm.
It was a night of delicious food (who made the cous cous? Yummy), mouth watering beverages (cashed by 10? Yup, its an ultimate party), and some crazy games.

If you havent joined us on the field for a while, remember we play Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday evenings around 5 at Bayfront. All are welcome.

Aloha and Good Bye to three wicked players!

League IV - Game 5

As people leave the island for summer we have some visitors who are joining our games. Thus every sunday seems to be a mix of new teams with new faces. This past sunday we enjoyed game 5 without rain...yay!
It seemed that this time Orange Crush would not be able to claim its usual second place after initially trailing by more than 5 points behind both Blue Velvet and the Black Plague. It was a tough day for Orange but they came back to take place two behind Blue in the final round.

Blue was its fantastic self shoing off beautifully played sequences and great communication. Toward the end of the game, their ring leader Dave got injured during a wicked D. But that didn't stop them...with tributes to Dave they kept leading bringing them back again as team number 1.

The BLack plague was a new mix with strong players. They dominated during the first part of the game even giving blue a headache. But in the end even the plague didn't have it in them to bring home something but the last place. Thus being out of the finals on sunday, June 4th!

The numbers are dwindling and yet we manage a fun and competitive sunday every week. With Pao Pao gone the black team looked a bit sparse but Matt and Blake joined the Back Plague and together they played their hardest. Blue has lost Bhama, who is thinking about retiring form the sport :( after a big collision with lody last week...but nothing stops blue from dominating. Orange does what it can...a silly and fun team, there to cause trouble. Here are the results from the last games:

It came as a suprise to all of us when we found out that Pao Pao (David) was leaving the island...leaving ultimate...leaving us :(
I believe he has been there almost everyday in the past years...missing no more than 5 days! Rain or shine, mud or dry earth there he is throwing a hammer, laughing and joking...

He has gone to join the navy and we will miss him very much!
